Team Hybrid traveled to the DR to fight in out last event of the year. We wrapped 2008 up in good fashion, as Joey Ponce and Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt fought and won on foreign soil in an event title Combat Xtremo.
Joey Ponce wins by arm lock in less than a minute. 30 seconds into round 1 Joey put his opponent in an arm lock forcing a submission win. For those who don’t know Joey went into this fight with a pretty bad sprained knee. But through heart, determination and mental toughness Joey rose to the occasion and persevered through it all. Joey is one of our Coaches, Friends and teammates who not only teaches us to fight by shows us how to do it as well.
Antwain Britt was the main event of the night, fighting DR native Tomas Sone. This was by far Antwain’s most impressive performance, as he stuffed take down attempt after take down attempt and used his impressive hand speed and footwork to make his opponent look clumsy on his feet. Sone, being a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt opted on pulling guard on several situations, only to succumb to Britt’s impressive ground and pound skills. The fight was eventually stopped in a little over 2 minutes into round 2. After Sone attempted to flee the ring while being pounded by “The Juggernaut” Sone verbally quit. Antwain improves his pro record to 8-1.
Special shout out to Matt Van Buren from DCA for fighting a hell of a fight. Even though he lost by decision, he fought an outstanding battle, and at only 22 years of age, this young heavyweight has a bright future.
Another shout out goes to all of the American fighters from who traveled and fought with us.
Congrats to Antwain and Joey again for their victories. We are very proud of you both.
Way to wrap up the fight season boys!
Go Team Hybrid!

The fight took place Saturday evening at the DC Armory. There were eight fights on the card and guess who got to start the night off with a bolt of excitement?
Our very own, Coach Buck Grant, had the opening honors. His opponent from Capital Jiu Jitsu, undefeated 5-0 Taylor Dixon, and Coach Grant had the entire place in a roar. Coach Grant came out first to the cage and was greeted by 4 rows of screaming Hybrid Academy students, instructors, and fans. Then Taylor was introduced with just as many, if not more screaming fans.
After a very respectful touch of the gloves, it was GO TIME! Only a few seconds passed as the men were feeling out their range. Coach Grant got hit with a stiff jab. It seemed to us that Taylor had turned on the “switch” that woke up the beast within. Coach Grant answered with a three punch combo that sent Taylor in awe, looking as though he had never been hit so hard in his life! A few more exchanges made, and they were clinched and on the cage jockeying for position, exchanging knees and position control. With double under hooks in place, a failed takedown attempt by Taylor left him on his back with Coach Grant in his guard. Coach Grant stayed busy the entire time, dropping bombs on Taylor.
When the opportunity allowed some elbows landed over Taylors brow that left him with a HUGE cut and made him a bloody mess!
The fight ended with Coach Grant tight waisting Taylor against the cage while he was in a turtle position. Coach delivered numerous punches to the head, took a breather and landed a knee to the body that made the entire place yell “UUUUUUUH”, and finally the ref stopped the madness at 3:52 of round 1.
We are all very proud of our Coach / Mentor / Friend, Mr. Buck Grant. He is an inspiration to the entire team.

After the rush settled from fight #1, we were waiting all evening for the final fight / main event. Robby “757″ Huston was to fight is toughest opponent to date.
Robby was the last fight of the night and we were ready to watch these two men go at it!
Round one was back and forth for the first 4 minutes. Robby landed punches that left his opponent stunned so many times, I still don’t know how he didn’t go down. They ended up on the ground and Robby fought to the bell, almost being submitted by a triangle. Bell rings and he lives to fight another round.
Round two, his opponent wanted nothing to do with Robby’s hands, so he took him down immediately and ended the fight with an arm lock.
Although Robby was not the victor this time, I know this fight will make his game skyrocket. This was his biggest opponent to date and 2009 will definately be the year of open doors for Robby and all of Hybrid Academy.
BIG THANKS to our entire team and all students and friends that made the trip to support our guys.
You don’t know how much that means to us!!
